Robbie Williams, live in Abu Dhabi? Of course I’m not going to miss this concert!
When the tickets went on sale IN NOVEMBER LAST YEAR, I immediately signed up to his website to ensure that I was in the pre-sale and had no risk of missing out… I then gathered up some girl friends and we started the (very lengthy) countdown to April 2015 for the concert 🙂
The concert was set for a Sunday night – which is the start of the work week for us folks here in the Middle East. Somewhere along the line (the stories we were told) it was announced that the concert was moving to the Saturday night – the end of the weekend. Obviously all tickets booked that showed Sunday night would be applicable for the Saturday night, but if you were like 2 of my friends (one not able to do Sunday nights, the other only arriving from Germany on Sunday morning), you had to either sell your ticket to someone else who could go on the Saturday, or you lost out on the concert… but got all your money back at least.
Anyway, that annoyance aside, the 5 of us booked to go together all met up for some pre-drinks and then drove down to Abu Dhabi / Yas Island. We arrived there at about 8 pm or so, found a little spot that looked good, and then split up to go get booze and food. While we were sitting waiting patiently for Robbie to come on, we started wondering what time he would actually show up. It’s no secret that there’s an awful trend here lately for all stars to come on stage anything from 1 to 2 hours LATE. It’s hugely disrespectful to the fans… but let’s leave that for another day, shall we?!
Back to us, at Robbie. We sat around munching on (not very nice) pizza, sipping our beers and coke (designated driver) and having a chill time. There was a bit of a roar from the crowd at one point, but seeing that it was only 8:40 pm at the time we knew it would not be him. Then, at 9:05 pm, there was another roar. And then the lights dimmed. And the roar got louder. And the stage came to life!!!!
AND THERE HE WAS!!!!!!!!!
Well, his silhouette anyway 😉 But he had arrived – ON TIME! Wearing his little devil horns and looking oh so sexy (as always 😳 )
His opening song was obviously ‘Let me Entertain You’, this being the Let me Entertain You tour, and as he promised when he walked on stage – ‘And for the next 2 hours, your ass is mine’ – the concert went on for about 2 hours, him running about all over the stage, singing all of his big hits (as promised), plus a whole bunch of covers including ‘Royals’ by Lorde, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ by U2, giving us one of the best concerts I have been to in the UAE. Scratch that – possibly in just about any of the concerts I have been to. It was certainly better than his concert that I went to in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2006 (and I was practically in the front for that one – stood for 14 hours outside the venue to make sure I was!) The visuals on stage were phenomenal, the backing singers and dancers exceptional, and the energy from the crowd was simply amazing! Hearing the crowd take over on more than one occasion while he was singing – pure goosebumps right there!
During the concert, one EXTREMELY lucky girl was called up ON STAGE and got to dance with him, and he hugged her. TWICE! Jealous? Me? NAH!
I did get re-tweeted by a Robbie Williams Fan Group though which is pretty awesome 🙂
By the end of the night we were all a little voiceless from all the screaming and singing, and we somehow managed to drive back to Dubai all still on a major Robbie high… we could have listened to him perform all night long!
Robbie, you’re welcome back
at my place in the UAE anytime you want!!!
I managed to take a few photos and a video… enjoy 🙂 (Click on the photos for a larger view)
(I tried very hard to stand still for this video…)
